About L'Espérance

A century-old house in the heart of Vitré

For more than a century, L'Espérance has welcomed travellers, families and residents of Vitré in a spirit of warmth and sincere hospitality. A fixture of the town's urban and social fabric, it embodies a certain idea of French hotel and restaurant keeping: simple, generous, and rooted in its origins.

A history of generations and transmission

L'Espérance opened its doors in 1907, at 21 Boulevard des Rochers, in Vitré, Ille-et-Vilaine. From the very beginning, the establishment became a landmark in the town, both a stopping point for travellers arriving by train and a table beloved by locals. Its location, just minutes from the station, made it a natural relay for those crossing the Marches de Bretagne.

In the 1920s, the establishment underwent its first developments. The dining rooms expanded, the clientele diversified, and L'Espérance established itself as one of the essential venues of local life. People came to lunch between business dealings, to celebrate important family occasions, or simply to meet after a day at the market.

The post-war period marked a new chapter. Reconstruction and the return to normal life breathed new energy into the establishment. In the 1970s, a major renovation modernised the rooms and facilities while preserving the soul of the house - that warmth and simplicity that had defined its reputation from the start.

A place of life and sharing

Over the decades, L'Espérance became far more than a hotel and restaurant. It became a living space for the local community. The large rooms host wedding banquets, anniversary dinners, family reunions and end-of-year company meals. Local associations, sports clubs and works committees organise their events here. The main hall can accommodate up to 400 guests, making L'Espérance an essential player in Vitré's social life.

The cuisine remains true to its foundations: fresh ingredients, traditional recipes, entirely homemade cooking. The weekday lunch menus, accessible and generous, attract a regular clientele of workers and families. The bar, open throughout the day, is a much-appreciated meeting point in the neighbourhood.

An establishment focused on comfort and contemporary needs

2-star rated, the hotel offers 14 rooms equipped with free WiFi, television, a private en-suite bathroom and a courtesy tray. Secure bike storage has also been added in response to the growth of soft mobility in the region. The establishment is non-smoking and the team speaks English to welcome international visitors.

Evening stopover packages are available, combining an overnight stay and dinner, aimed at passing travellers or business guests. This formula, inherited from a long hotel tradition, reflects L'Espérance's commitment to remaining a practical and accessible establishment without ever losing the spirit of hospitality that has always defined it.

L'Espérance today

Today, L'Espérance is:

  • A hotel in Vitré, close to the train station
  • A welcoming restaurant
  • A recognised reception venue for events and banquets

But above all, it is a living house, carried by a committed team, which continues to welcome guests with the same care for their well-being as it did over a century ago. The loyalty of its guests - some families have been coming here for several generations - is the finest reward and the most eloquent proof of that continuity.

A story that continues to be written

More than a hundred years after its founding, L'Espérance remains what it has always been: an open house, in the service of those who pass through and those who stay. Within these walls, hundreds of life's moments have been written - first wedding meals, family reunions, business lunches, nights of travel. Each generation has added its touch while preserving the essential.

And tomorrow, as yesterday, the story will continue... with you.
